چکیده

Scanning electron microscopic studies have been found to be important in revealing corneal nipple varieties in some insects other than nocturnal moths. The study could present some modifications in certain classical concepts regarding the relations between corneal nipple and phylogenic position of insects. The study further revealed the special role played by corneal nipples in nocturnal, crepuscular and social insect species. In addition, scanning electron microscopy was found to be important in studying the detailed morphology of facet hairs suitable for functioning as infra-red receptors.

The natural transparency and piezoelectric response of the Greta oto butterfly wing.

The Greta oto, or the "glasswing butterfly", is a member of the Ithomiini tribe. Although rare among lepidopteran, the G. oto's wings are naturally transparent. To understand the material properties of natural transparency, the various structures on the surface of the wings, both the transparent and brown "veins" and wing parameter regions were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ...

Light on the moth-eye corneal nipple array of butterflies.

The outer surface of the facet lenses in the compound eyes of moths consists of an array of excessive cuticular protuberances, termed corneal nipples. We have investigated the moth-eye corneal nipple array of the facet lenses of 19 diurnal butterfly species by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscope, as well as by optical modelling. The nipples...

Diverse set of Turing nanopatterns coat corneae across insect lineages.

Nipple-like nanostructures covering the corneal surfaces of moths, butterflies, and Drosophila have been studied by electron and atomic force microscopy, and their antireflective properties have been described. In contrast, corneal nanostructures of the majority of other insect orders have either been unexamined or examined by methods that did not allow precise morphological characterization. H...

Catalyst of Ni and Co dependencies for carbon nanotube synthesis by CVD method

In this research, the effect of catalyst type on the CNTs synthesis was investigated. The carbonnanotubes (CNTs) were produced on stainless steel substrates and two of catalyst with differentcharacteristics by using Thermal chemical vapor deposition (TCVD) method. The catalysts have theimportant role for the growth carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Acetylene gas (C2H2) diluted by NH3 wasused as the reac...

Variations of the Normal Human Limbal Stem Cells Detected by In Vivo Confocal Microscopy

Background  To report normal variations of the limbal structures using in vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy. Methods: This was a retrospective study of fourteen eyes from 11 healthy individuals. Confocal imaging of cornea and limbus was performed using Heidelberg Retina Tomograph III Rostock Corneal Module. Results: The typical structure of the palisades of Vogt (POV) was detected ...
